Crispy Greek Fried Cheese (Printable)

Golden, crunchy exterior with melty interior Greek cheese slices fried to perfection and served with fresh lemon wedges.

# What You Need:

→ Cheese

01 - 9 oz firm Greek cheese (Kefalotyri, Graviera, or Halloumi)

→ Coating

02 - 2/3 cup all-purpose gluten-free flour (or regular flour if not gluten-free)
03 - Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

→ Frying

04 - 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (for frying)
05 - Lemon wedges, to serve

# How to Make It:

01 - Cut the cheese into ½ inch thick slices or wedges. Pat the cheese dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture for better coating adhesion.
02 - Place the flour on a flat plate and season lightly with black pepper. Mix evenly to distribute the seasoning throughout the coating.
03 - Press each cheese slice into the seasoned flour, coating both sides thoroughly. Shake off any excess flour to prevent a heavy, doughy coating.
04 - Heat the olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering but not smoking, approximately 2-3 minutes.
05 - Carefully place the cheese slices in the hot oil without overcrowding the pan. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
06 - Transfer the fried cheese to paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve immediately while hot and crispy with lemon wedges for squeezing over the top.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • It comes together in just 20 minutes but tastes like something youd order at a restaurant
  • The contrast between the crunchy exterior and molten interior is absolutely addictive
02 -
  • I learned the hard way that wet cheese causes violent oil splattering, so pat it thoroughly dry before coating
  • Medium-high heat is crucial: too low and the cheese melts before it crisps, too high and the coating burns
03 -
  • Have everything ready before you start frying because this cheese waits for no one and needs to be served hot
  • A pair of kitchen tongs makes flipping the cheese easier than a spatula and gives you more control
